In the 2023 Super Bowl, the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Philadelphia Eagles 38–35.

The Chiefs responded in only three minutes, so it wasn’t a long wait. A scramble by Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes (whose previously damaged ankle appeared OK) and an 18-yard touchdown pass to Travis Kelce were both part of the team’s own 75-yard march. After six plays, the game was tied 7-7.

After trading touchdowns on their first drives, the Eagles and Chiefs struggled on their subsequent possessions. Following a three-and-out by Philadelphia and a punt, Kansas City embarked on a 42-yard drive that resulted in a failed field goal.

Philadelphia’s opening play of the second quarter was legendary. A.J. Brown caught a 45-yard touchdown pass from Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts to extend his team’s lead to 14-7.

Kansas City’s following possession didn’t provide much action. Philadelphia grabbed control in an effort to increase the advantage. But as he attempted to avoid a tackler, Jalen Hurts made a rare error and fumbled the ball, the Eagles’ first postseason turnover. Nick Bolton of the Chiefs scooped it up and sprinted into the end zone to tie the game 14-14.

Jalen Hurts and Philadelphia remained unfazed. The following drive was launched by Hurts with a rush, a pass, another pass, and a rush. Hurts capped the drive with a three-yard sprint for his second rushing touchdown, giving the Eagles a 21-14 lead. The Eagles would not be stopped, electing to go for it on both fourth-down situations.

The NFL MVP-winning quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs, Patrick Mahomes, was sacked late in the second quarter as he sprinted for a first down. T.J. Edwards, a defender for the Eagles, tackled Mahomes, reinjuring his ankle and causing him to limp off the field. While sitting on the bench, Mahomes groaned.
